| HIST | of Wisacky, South Carolina of South Carolina Date Published: February 5, 2009 Historic Wisacky home destroyed by fire Photo provided By RANDY BURNS Item staff writer rburns@theitem.com A historic two-story home in Wisacky has been destroyed by fire. Lee County Fire Chief Mike Bedenbaugh said the house located on S.C. 527 in Wisacky had been serving as the office headquarters for Coker Farms. No one was in the house at the time of the fire, Bedenbaugh said. The 911 call came in at 7:24 p.m. Wednesday, he said. “The first responders arrived on the scene at 7:37 p.m.,” he said. “The back end of the house was engulfed when we arrived. And it didn’t take long for it to spread all over the house.” Fourteen fire trucks and about 50 firefighters representing the fire departments in Lee, Sumter and Darlington counties responded to the 911 call, which was made by Wilson Coker, the owner of the house. “He was living in a house next door,” Bedenbaugh said. Wilson Coker bought the house from Wallace DesChamps in August 2007, according to Wilson’s father John Coker. Randy Burns / The Item “My wife and I have been living there part time to help out our son’s business,” he said. “This is unbelievable. We had a lot of family antiques in there, and all of the records for the business were in there.” The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen, Bedenbaugh said. The State Law Enforcement Division will assist in the investigation. “I don’t have any idea of the cause of the fire,” he said. “At this time, we have no reason to suspect arson, but because of the value and the historic nature of the house, we want to be sure to rule it out.” The house has been estimated to be worth $750,000, Bedenbaugh said. “It’s my understanding that construction on the house began in 1897 or 1898,” John Coker said. “It was finished in the early 1900s.” State Rep. Grady Brown, D-Bishopville, said Lee County has lost a historic landmark. “You couldn’t replace that building for $1 million,” he said. Wallace P.
