Newspaper article on 20 Dec 1894- A shocking accident occurred at McCown’s Mill on Tuesday, which resulted in Mr. Fred W. Hutchinson losing his life. Messrs. Geoge Williams and Junius Law were out hunting, and stopped at McCown’s Mill to rest, leaning their guns up by the side of the building. Mr. Hutchinson, the miller, came to the door of the mill, and reaching out took up by the muzzle Mr. Williams’ gun, which was nearest him. As he lifted it, he accidently struck the hammer on the door-step. The gun was discharged with the muzzle but a few inches from Mr. Hutchinson’s right side, and the entire load of buck shot which it contained went into him, inflicting a fearful wound. Mr. Hutchinson walked forward a few feet, calling to the young men that he was shot; he then sank to the door and never spoke afterwards. Physicians were promptly summoned, but the poor man was dead within an hour, before they could get to him. The Coroner held an inquest over the remains yesterday, and a verdict was rendered in accordance with the above facts. Mr. Hutchinson was a hard working man and a useful citizen. He was about 40 yers old. A wife and several children survive him. [1] |
