  HIST	He moved from a wooden frame house (418 Broad Street) to a brick house he had erected in 1930 (424 Broad Street). Then the family moved to a brick house he had erected (1081 Alice Drive) in 1957. All houses were in Sumter, South Carolina He died of cancer of the bladder Mr. A. J. Hatfield was a beloved member of Grace Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and on many committees. In 1949 he donated land on N. Main Street for the church to sponsor a Sunday School Station. In December 1949 the mission became Northside Memorial Baptist Church (a memorial to his son A. J. Jr., who lost his life in WWII. Mrs. Hatfield attended Grace Baptist Church with her family, but was not a member. The family helped to charter Alice Dirve Baptist Church on October 21, 1956. This name showed up in Reverend Tolar’s log when he married them on 12/30/1914. Membership might have been earlier.  [2, 7]
