HATFIELD Posted Tuesday, April 3, 2018 6:00 am Betty Saunders Hatfield, 93, beloved wife of Aubrey Hatfield Sr., departed this earthly life on March 31, 2018, at Palmetto Health Tuomey. Born on Dec. 8, 1924, in Chadbourn, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late James Arthur Saunders Sr. and Lucy Yates Saunders. Mrs. Hatfield was a charter member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. She was a teacher in the primary department and later a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was a leader of a ladies mission group of Alice Drive Baptist Church, who entertained and sponsored birthday parties for the residents at a local nursing home in Sumter each month. She was a member of the Sumter American Legion Auxiliary Unit 15 and the Tuesday Morning Club. She moved to Sumter at an early age, graduating from Edmunds High School. After graduating, she moved back to North Carolina with her family and began working at Bluethenthal Army Air Force Base in Wilmington, North Carolina. Survivors include her husband, Aubrey Hatfield Sr.; one son, Aubrey Hatfield Jr. (Earlene) of Sumter; two daughters, Karen Hatfield of Aiken and Becky Williams (Keith) of Ecuador, South America; three grandchildren, Amy Moss (Tony) of Sumter, Hunter Williams of LeHigh Acres, Florida, and Blake Williams of Orlando, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Molly Moss and Mason Moss, both of Sumter; and a sister, Macy Spires of Columbia. She was preceded in death by one son, Arthur David Hatfield; four brothers, James Arthur Saunders, Charles Richard Saunders, Alex Saunders and Lacy Saunders; and one sister, Joyce Olivia Saunders Ward. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday. Burial will be private at Sumter Cemetery.
