BLACK Hartwell Arthur Black, 94, of Sumter, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008. Born March 30, 1914, in Ruffin, he was a son of Thomas Arthur and Annie Laurie Black. Mr. Black was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (PCA), where he was a member of the Cornerstone Sunday School class. He was also a member of the Forest Land Owners Association and the Sumter County Land Owners Association. He maintained a lifelong interest in forestry and passed on his love for the land to his children and grandchildren. He was a graduate of Clemson University Class of 1935 and received a degree in electrical engineering. He was a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and served in England and Iceland during World War II. He retired as head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the U.S. Naval Base in Charleston, where he worked as a design engineer. He was first married to the late Edith Price Black and later to Dorothy Evans Weatherly Black who survives along with two children, Karen Stevens of Orlando, Fla., and Denny Black and wife, Lynda, of Anderson; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn Black of Sumter; a stepson, Wayne Weatherly of Taylors; four grandchildren, Shannon Alexander and husband, Jimmy, Scott Stevens and wife, Rhonda, Sammy Black and wife, Elena, and Kelli Davis and husband, Brad; four step-grandchildren, Crystal Morris and husband, Flynn, Treva Fulton and husband, John, Scott Weatherly and wife, Olivia, and Chris Cottingham and wife, Rebecca; eight great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Samuel Black; three brothers, Dr. Robert Black, Thomas Black and Henry Black; a sister, Anne Black Kinard; and a stepson, Rudy Weatherly. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walt Kendall and the Rev. Stuart Mizelle officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
