| HIST | of Mayesville, South Carolina Patricia Hines | Visit Guest Book MAYESVILLE - Patricia Mayes Hines, 61, died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was active in the Anglican Church and a former member of her family's church, Mayesville Presbyterian Church. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, October 15, 1948, to James Edgar Mayes and Katie Beaty Mayes, she was a graduate of Ashley Hall School in Charleston, SC, and made her debut at the St. Cecilia Society in Charleston. Patricia was a first honors graduate of the University of South Carolina's Honors College and was also selected S.C. Maid of Cotton by the National Cotton Council, Memphis TN. She received her master's degree in English at the University of Virginia and continued to be involved in education at various levels in her career. She was particularly proud of her appointment to the U.S. National Commission on Libraries and Information Science (NCLIS) in 2003, which promoted reading as the key to education. Patricia also proudly served as chief of staff for domestic policy for President Reagan, and subsequently became Assistant Secretary of Education for Research and Information under the elder President Bush. She often stated it was a privilege to serve in Washington; she cherished all the lasting friendships she made through her years of public service. Survivors include her husband Richard Towill Hines; a son, James Williams; a daughter, Kathleen Mayes; a sister, Kathleen M. DuBose and her husband Dr. E. McDonald DuBose; a brother, James E. Mayes, Jr. and his wife Lisa Jackson Mayes; and several nieces and nephews. A Requiem Mass will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, at the Chapel of St. Charles the Martyr, Mayesville, with the Rt. Rev. Keith L. Ackerman, former Episcopal Bishop Quincy, IL, the Rev. Dan C. Clarke and the Rev. Thomas W. Allen officiating. Active pallbearers will be members of the Society of King Charles, the Martyr. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Andrews Foundation, P.O. Box 169 Mayesville, SC 29104.
