Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Landgrave Smith and Addie Newman Smith. Mrs. Powell was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church. She retired from the Selective Service System and the S.C. Employment Service. Survivors include four daughters, Gail P. Ferguson (Orby) of Myrtle Beach, Betty P. Brown of Camden, Irene P. McElveen of Florence and Alice P. Brunson (Harry) of Sumter; and 16 grandchildren, Shannon F. DuBose, Jane F. Kerwin, John C. Alford Jr., Stanley Alford, Greg Alford, Vera Mooneyham, Richard Brunson, Bryan Brunson, Cynthia Quick, Bobby McElveen, Steve McElveen, Danny McElveen, Pam Fagan, Woody Brown, Kyle Brown and Gary Brown. She was preceded in death by a son, George H. Powell; a daughter, Alma P. Alford; and a grandson, Hughey Brown. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Owens officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2131 Gion St. Memorial contributions may be made to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis St., Sumter, SC 29150.
