Due to bad health, he was advised by the Doctor to leave the Tobacco business and work more in the fresh air. Accepting the Doctors advise, he went to work on a Rice Plantation on the Combehee River which flows into St. Helena Sound. In 1919 he worked with the Standard Oil Company and was transferred to Sumter, South Carolina. Moving to Sumter, he and his family lived in an apartment on the corner of Harby Avenue and Calhoun Street. Later they moved to McQueen Street. While living there in 1921, his wife Lila died. This caused him and his two sons to move to Jacksonville, Florida. In 1922 he moved back to Sumter and became a Traveling Salesman until 1926. He then began Truck Farming and raising flower plants for sale. At this time, he lived on the Manning Road and later moved and ran a Farm on Highway 15, across from the present Industrial Park. From there he moved to Highway 378 near Brewington Crossroads, where he continued farming, planting tobacco and cotton, until a few years before his death. At the time of his marriage in Charleston, South Carolina, Herbert lived at 49 Ashley Avenue. Upon the death of his father he and his family moved across Colonial Lake to 40 Rutledge Avenue with his mother until he moved to Sumter. [5] |
