GRIFFIN PINEWOOD -- Vera Smith Griffin, 88, widow of Friendly Graham Griffin, of 65 years, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Ripley, Miss., she was a daughter of the late Luther Smith and Bernice Smith. Mrs. Griffin was a member of the Pinewood United Methodist Church for 67 years where she served as church treasurer for more than 35 years. She was the co-youth director of the UMYF. She was retired from the Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Agency. One of her favorite pastimes was playing bridge and was an active participate in several bridge clubs. She was a charter member of the Pinewood American Legion Post 117 Auxiliary. Surviving are a daughter, Beatrice Griffin McCormick and husband Bob of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Graham McCormick and wife Judy, Jonathan McCormick and Jason McCormick; two great grandchildren, Anna McCormick and Michael McCormick; three sisters-in-law, Naomay Griffin of Pinewood, Naomi McCutchen of Bishopville and Ruth Aycock of Sumter; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and a special cousin, Gladys Pridgen. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pinewood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mickey Bell and the Rev. Claire Murdock officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Dr. Calhoun Aycock, Jr., Gregg McCutchen III, Charles Griffin III, Don McLeod, Wade McLeod and Al Pridgen. Honorary pallbearers will be Wedrell Lee and Vernon Swygert. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Pinewood United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 246, Pinewood, S.C. 29125.
