HEYWARD McLEOD MONTPELIER, Vt. -- Heyward "Mac" McLeod, 85, passed away peacefully at his home in Montpelier on Wednesday, April 21, 2010. He was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Pinewood, a son of the late Marshall Clinton and Eva Ardis McLeod. Mac grew up and attended schools in Pinewood and graduated from the U.S. Army Aerial Navigation School in San Marcos, Texas. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He graduated from Bentley College in Boston in 1949 and from Johnson State College in 1986. He was employed by National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier for 39 years, serving as director of corporate taxes when he retired in 1988. On June 2, 1946, he married Mary Kalariotes in Manchester, N.H. Mac was an active member of First Baptist Church in Montpelier, serving on the board of trustees, the board of deacons and as church treasurer for many years. He was a member of Aurora Lodge No. 22 F&AM and also the Scottish Rite Masonic Bodies, Mount Sinai Temple No. 3 Shrine. He was also an active member and served on the boards of Central Vermont Association for Retarded Citizens, Vermont Association for Retarded Citizens, the Green Mountain School and Guardianship Trust. He enjoyed square dancing, bridge, fishing with his brothers, camping with his family and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Mary; three children, Harriet McLeod Prim of Alexandria, Va., Clint McLeod of Montpelier and Heather McLeod and her husband, Eugene Lawrence, of Grand Isle; three grandchildren, April Gardiner and her husband, Kevin, and Cassidy and Cody Lawrence, all of Grand Isle; a great-grandson, Levi Gardiner of Grand Isle; two brothers, Cody McLeod of Pinewood and Lawrence McLeod of Sumter; and a sister, Hattie Smith of Walhalla; and many nieces, nephews and special friends and family. Mac was predeceased by his parents; his sister, Edith (McLeod) Pritchard; his brothers, Hampton, Allan, Jimmy, Marshall, Lee and Gene McLeod; and his son-in-law, Warren Prim. The family would like to give special thanks to caregivers Ella, Kristen, Robin and Jean and also to the staff of Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice. Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Barber and Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Montpelier, Vt. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Barber and Lanier Funeral Home with burial to follow in Green Mount Cemetery.
