SHERMAN L. BALLS-BROUGHTON
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Sherman Lamont Balls-Broughton, 28, entered eternal rest on Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, in Sumter County.
He was born March 22, 1981, in Sumter County, a son of Eugene Broughton and Marie Heyward Benbow. In his youth, he attended Orangehill AME Church in Wedgefield, where he was a member of the usher board and the youth choir. He received his education in the school systems of Sumter County and graduated from Lakewood High School in 1999. After completion of high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was deployed to Iraq in 2005-2006. On Oct. 29, 2009, he was honorably discharged. He gained employment with the Sumter County Fire Department as a firefighter and later as a federal firefighter in Montgomery. During his services, he received the Department of Defense Firefighter One and Two Certificates, the hazard mat tech certificate and the National Register of EMT certificate for his meritorious services. He continued his studies at Columbia Southern University online as he was working toward an associate degree in fire science. He also received his driver operation license as a truck driver of heavy equipment and rescues tech certificate.
Survivors are his three loving children, Tyshon Broughton and Jaden Broughton (his former wife, Iasia Johnson) of Sumter, and Amiya Broughton (her mother, Lynn Harris) of Montgomery; his loving and devoted parents, Eugene (Pearl) Broughton of Sumter and Marie Heyward (Melvin) Benbow of Wedgefield; two brothers, Lionell (Roshell) Heyward of Nashville, Tenn., and Darryl (Kenya) Broughton of Atlanta; three sisters, Patricia Broughton of Conway, and Erica (Jonelle) Johnson of Sumter and Kendall (Demetrius) of Dalzell.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Eugene and Geneva Broughton; his maternal grandparents, Stephen Marion and Mary Duncan Heyward; and an uncle, Edward Hayward.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Orangehill African Methodist Episcopal Church in Wedgefield with the Rev. Lemuel Washington, pastor, assisting the Rev. Roger Mullins. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park of Sumter.
Pallbearers will be Maxwell Air Force Federal Fire Department, Shaw Air Force Base Fire Department and Sumter Fire Department.
Flower bearers will be Lakewood Class of 1999.
The procession will leave at 10:15 a.m. Saturday from the home of his mother, 6610 Middleton Road, Wedgefield.

Man, 28, dies in Friday single-car wreck

A 28-year-old man Alabama man died Friday night in a single car wreck on Cane Savannah Road, according to officials.
Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock identified the deceased as Sherman Lamont Balls. An announcement by Community Funeral Home identifies him as Sherman Balls Broughton, of 1313 Whisperwood Court, Montgomery, Ala.
Bullock said the time of death was 8:45 p.m. Friday, and the cause of death was massive head trauma and massive trauma.
Broughton was traveling east on Cane Savannah Road in a 2008 Chevrolet four-door about 6.3 miles west of Sumter when the wreck occurred, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Scot Edgeworth.
Broughton was entering a stretch of road that curves to the left when he went off the right side of the road and struck several trees, Edgeworth said.
"The driver was not wearing a seatbelt," and was killed at the scene, he said.
Broughton's family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his parents, Melvin and Marie Heyward Benbow of 6610 Middleton Road, Wedgefield.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Community Funeral Home.
