Burke, 86, widower of Mary Camilla James Nunnery Burke, was taken from us on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2011. Born June 9, 1925, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hillard and Chessie Truluck Burke. Mr. Burke, "Sarge," as his friends called him, was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 20 years as a senior staff sergeant, having served overseas during World War II and the Korean War. He was very proud of his military service to his country. He also loved the Clemson Tigers. He later retired from Blue Ridge Trucking Co. Survivors are one stepson, Robert Wayne Nunnery of Santee; two stepdaughters, Hazel Ann Lyles and husband, Ray, and Barbara Lee Smith, both of Sumter; daughter-in-law, Anna Ruth Nunnery of Sumter; one sister, Peggy Samotis of Lexington; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Norwood Burke; two sisters, Gloria Burke Lavangie and Norma Burke Fann; and three step-grandchildren, Thomas Duane Allen, Christy Ann Martin and Gerald David Allen. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Tommy Atkinson officiating and with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service. Memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 1116 Manning Road, Sumter, SC 29150.
