HIST | “Refugee from the French Revolution. France at that time was not safe for persons having ‘de’ affixed to their names.” John Francis DeLorme (in French, de I ‘Orme) was born at Conde sur Moireau, near Caen, France. One family tradition relates that he was forced to leave France at the time of the French Revolution; another states that he came to the United States to escape the revolution in Haiti. The dates and places of his children’s births seem to support the former tradition. His brother-in-law, Michael Ramee, immigrated to South Carolina also and lived in Richland County. Before coming to South Carolina John Francis DeLorme was a furniture maker in Philadelphia. He was engaged in the same business in Charleston, S. C. in October, 1791. He became a citizen in South Carolina in 1793 and lived in Charleston, Columbia and Sumter. In 1803 he was arrested and fined in Charleston County for “gaming.” He and his wife moved to Texas (near Austin) in the 1830’s. She died there and he returned to South Carolina. In 1805 DeLorme was an attorney for French “legionaires” who served as marines on board the frigate South Carolina during the American Revolution. These officers and seamen had been enlisted by the Duke of Luxembourg who leased the South Carolina, formerly L’Indien, to Commodore Gillon of the South Carolina Navy. By 1805 the legionaires had still not been paid for their services. The majority of John’s descendants are still found in South Carolina, although a son of Henry Britton DeLorme moved to Alabama, Dr. Homer A. DeLorme moved to St. Louis, Missouri, and descendants of Charles Theodore LeLorme live in Savannah, Georgia. This genealogy was compiled by Harold Morgan DeLorme, Jr. who is on the staff of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Additional information was supplied by Dr. James M. Ariall of Columbia, S. C. [6, 7] | |
