HIST | Robert R. Dobson Col. Robert Roy Dobson, age 87, beloved husband of Ruth Briggs Dobson, died on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011, at his residence. Dobson was born in Charlotte, N.C. He was the son of the late Robert and Martha Lockhart Dobson. Dobson was a graduate of the University of South Carolina and served for 30 years in the United States Army. He was an infantry officer in the European theater during World War II, participating in three campaigns. After World War II, he was reassigned to field artillery and received the wings of an Army aviator and subsequently served as an arms aviator in the Korean War. Assignments after the Korean War included staff duty at the United States Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., Command and general staff college, Armed Forces Staff College, during the Vietnam War. Dobson was an aviators staff office and advisor to the Vietnam Army. His last assignment prior to retirement was as the director of flight training at Ft. Stewart, Ga. Dobson's decorations include: The Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (Valor) with Cluster, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Air Medal with Clusters, European, Korean and Vietnamese Campaign Medals. He was a member of the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church of Sumter. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Deborah Dobson Landreth and her husband, Les, of Norfolk, Va.; one grandson, Briggs Lockwood and his fiancé, Sherry Baker; a granddaughter, Dr. Brooke Spain Rudis and her husband, John, of Chesapeake, Va.; and three great grandchildren, Alexa Rudis, Colby Rudis and Collin Rudis. A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Holy Comforter Memorial Garden with inurnment following in the Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends following the service Monday in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Comforter Memorial Garden Fund, 213 N.
