HIST | Date Published: December 6, 2008 JAMES L. ALEXANDER Sr. James L. "Dick" Alexander Sr., 85, husband of Doris Carolyn Owens Alexander, died Friday, December 5, 2008 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Darlington County, he was a son of the late Claude M. Alexander and the late Floride Crosswell Alexander. Mr. Alexander was an active member of Elliot Baptist Church having served as a deacon, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, and also coached the young men's softball team. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 104 in Bishopville, and the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 74. He spent many years farming in Lee County and was a soil technician for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in Lee and Sumter counties and retired following his service in Sumter. Mr. Alexander loved gardening and watching the Atlanta Braves. He loved his family, helping others, and his Lord Jesus Christ. Survivors include his wife of Sumter; two children, James L. "Jim" Alexander Jr. (Hope) of Sumter, and Cindy Alexander Warnock (Mike) of Pooler, Ga.; a brother, Charles D. Alexander of Lugoff; two sisters, Helen Alexander Jordan of Bishopville, and Bernice Alexander Shupe of Florence; five grandchildren, Rebecca, Joshua, and Stephanie Warnock, and Sarah and Grayson Alexander; a special family member, Pearl Dew of Ashwood; several nieces and nephews; and his caregivers, Carol Young and Mary Cummings. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Maude Jordan and Nancy Alexander Mackey. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Griggs officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
