Dennis said vehicle speeds reached 80 mph. The pursuit ended at the intersection of Saint Paul’s Church Road and S.C. 441 when Walker ran a red light and smashed into a Ford Windstar van being driven by the man who later died. • Both men were transported by emergency medical personnel to Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Posted in Obits on Friday, May 23, 2008 Bond for Walker set at $100,000 Bond was set Thursday at $100,000 for a 25-year-old man accused of running a red light while involved in a high-speed pursuit with deputies, smashing into another vehicle and killing a 44-year-old man. Jonathan Ervin Walker, 25, formerly of 2785 Burnt Gin Road, is charged with failing to stop for a blue light resulting in death in the May 21 incident that killed Eastover resident Clarence Gary Caraway. Authorities said Walker was fleeing from law enforcement after a deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop at Cherryvale Drive and U.S. 76/378 because he was not wearing a seatbelt and the tags on the 2001 Dodge Dakota Walker was driving belonged to a 1992 Ford Escort. Speeds reached approximately 80 mph, Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said. Walker ran a red light at St. Paul's Church Road and S.C. 441, reports said, broadsiding Caraway's Ford Windstar van. Both men were taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center and then to Palmetto Health Richland, where Caraway later died. Ten of Caraway's family members were present for the bond hearing, along with Sumter County victim's advocate Gwen Herod and attorney J. Thomas McElveen III on behalf of the victim's family. Walker was pushed into the courtroom in a wheelchair and advised of his rights to have an attorney, to request a jury trial, to appear at any proceedings regarding his case and to request a preliminary hearing, where a magistrate would determine whether the state has probable cause to carry the case over to trial. Caraway's brother, Jeff Caraway, addressed the court, asking Magistrate Kathy Ward not to "take it lightly" and to "set the bond as high as possible." Jeff Caraway's wife, Sarah, said Walker has proven he will not do "what the law says he has to do." "If he would have had the ... decency to stop, we wouldn't be here today," she said. Herod said she also thinks Walker might not show up for trial if he is released. "On behalf of the victim's family and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office … we feel he would pose a flight risk," Herod said. "He has not shown up for court on two separate driving offenses … (he has shown) a continued disregard for traffic laws that has resulted in this tragic incident." The two driving offenses Herod spoke of are convictions for driving under suspension. According to court records, Walker did not pay the fines for those two offenses. Bench warrants were issued and served at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center after the bond hearing. When he addressed the court, Walker, in a barely-audible tone, said he was "sorry it happened." When asked if he had ever been arrested, Walker said he had not. Herod brought the two DUS convictions and a 2005 conviction for simple possession of marijuana to the court's attention. Walker said he had only been ticketed in each instance, not taken to jail. The nature of the charge, the seriousness of the consequences and the fact Walker did not keep his obligations with the court concerning his DUS convictions indicate that Walker might be a flight risk, Ward said. After setting bond, Ward told Walker if he was able to post bond, he must pay the balance of his fines, which total $1,975.03, before he can be released. If released, she said, he must remain in South Carolina, keep the court informed of any change of address, and appear for roll call Sept.15. Posted in Itnews01 on Friday, July 11, 2008 Man ID'd in fatal road incident The man killed when Sumter County sheriff's deputies became involved in a high-speed pursuit Tuesday evening has been identified as 44-year-old Eastover resident Clarence Gary Caraway. Caraway died at about 3:25 p.m. Wednesday at Columbia's Palmetto Health Richland from injuries suffered when a 2001 Dodge Dakota driven by Jonathan Ervin Walker, 25, ran a red light at St. Paul's Church Road and S.C. 441, broadsiding Caraway's Ford Windstar van at about 7:57 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities said Walker of 2785 Burnt Gin Road was fleeing from law enforcement after a deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop at Cherryvale Drive and U.S. 76/378 because Walker was not wearing a seatbelt and records showed the truck's tags belonged to a 1992 Ford Escort. Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said speeds reached approximately 80 mph as Walker led deputies on the chase. After the wreck, the S.C. Highway Patrol assumed responsibility for the investigation, Dennis said, because his agency was involved in the pursuit. An incident report said troopers also found approximately two to three grams of marijuana inside a small plastic bag in Walker's jacket pocket. Walker and Caraway were both initially transported to Tuomey Regional Medical Center; medical helicopters were not flying because of the weather, a Tuomey representative said. The men were later transported to Palmetto Health Richland. No information on Walker's condition was available Thursday. Walker was charged with driving under suspension, third offense; failure to stop for a blue light and siren; operating an uninsured vehicle; improper vehicle license; and seatbelt violation. It is unclear if more charges will be filed by the Highway Patrol in light of Caraway's death. Highway Patrol spokesman Josef Robinson said Thursday the incident is still under investigation and no additional charges have yet been filed.
