NAPOLEON GASS
Napoleon Gass, 82, died Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at his home, 45 Reese St.
Born in Orangeburg County on May 25, 1925, he was a son of the late Rev. Baxter Gass Sr. and Prettie Grant Gass. Mr. Gass was united in marriage, first to the late Alean Jenkins Gass and later to Gwindree Glassco Gass. He retired from Santee Print Works. He was a faithful member of Antioch United Methodist Church for many years, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men and a past member of the usher board.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories five sons, Leroy Gass of Hillside, N.J., Napoleon Edward (Aniste) Gass, Lorenzo (Lynette) Gass and Haley Gass, all of Columbia, and Larry J. Gass of Allentown, Pa.; four daughters, Ruth Gass Maple, Loretta Gass (Tony) Friday and Pamela Gass (Paul) White, all of Sumter, and Debra Glassco of Dalzell; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Catherine Malloy of Fayetteville, N.C., Eartha McDuffie of Baltimore, Md., and Delores (Nathan) Young of Syracuse, N.Y; his mother-in-law, Corine Peterson of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Nathaniel Gass Sr., Baxter Gass Sr., Melvin Gass Sr. and Wilbur Gass.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Antioch United Methodist Church, 4040 Dubose Siding Road, with the Rev. Barbara L. Reid, pastor, presiding, the Rev. Aniste Gass officiating, assisted by the Revs. James L. Reid and Ethel Smith. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be United Methodist Men.
Flower bearers will be United Methodist Women.
Mr. Gass will be placed in the church at noon for viewing and the casket will remain open until the hour of service.
There will be no viewing after the service.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his daughter, Ruth Gass Maple, 851 Perry Blvd., Sumter.
