| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina of Richmond, Virginia at death JAMES KENNEDY MCLEOD Posted Saturday, May 7, 2022 6:00 am RICHMOND, Va. - James Kennedy "Ken" McLeod, 80, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2022, in Richmond, after struggling with Parkinson's Disease. Born on July 3, 1941, he was a son of the late James Thornwell McLeod and Lottie Dennis McLeod. He was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Jane Lawhon, and beloved wife, Carolyn Cole Scott McLeod of 43 years. Ken is survived by his children, Erik McLeod of Plantation, Florida, and Eden McLeod of Richmond; as well as numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Born in Winnsboro, Ken grew up living in Rembert, Pinewood, Antioch, Ridgeway and Florence, the town where he spent his teenage years before enrolling at the University of South Carolina and graduating with a history degree in 1963. After teaching at Dentsville High School in Columbia, he returned to USC for his master's degree in social work and met his soon-to-be wife, Carolyn, who just so happened to be living in the same apartment building. Ken and Carolyn were married in 1968 and moved to Sumter, where they raised two children, made numerous steadfast friends over the years and were known by many throughout the community. Ken and Carolyn were, at one time, members of Trinity United Methodist Church, as well as First Presbyterian Church and, later, the Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbia. Ken was a longtime member of "The Y," as well as a Thursday regular at Cole's and later at The Diner. After a devoted career of more than 30 years as a social worker for the Santee-Wateree Mental Health Center, he retired and helped care for Carolyn before her passing in 2012. To those who knew him, he was an incredibly kind, thoughtful, generous and selfless soul who had a knack for always seeing the positive in any situation, no matter what. For the last four years of his life, Ken lived in Richmond, where he was cared for by his daughter, Eden. The children would also like to extend a special thank you to Jalal Quarles and Tracey Fetty, whose invaluable help in caring for their father was a gift. Funeral services will be announced at a later date, but offers of condolence may be sent to Eden McLeod, 5240 Sheridan Lane, Richmond, VA 23225. [1, 2] | |
