Jane McGowan Howle CHARLOTTE - Jane McGowan Howle of Charlotte, NC died at Carolinas Medical Center surrounded by her family and many friends on May 14, 2012 after a short illness. She was born in Greenwood, SC on June 26, 1937, the daughter of the late Mabel Harvey McGowan (Bethurum) and William DeVeaux McGowan. Mrs. Howle was a graduate of Greenwood High School and earned a BA degree from the University of SC where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority. Following graduation she resided in Washington DC and was receptionist and secretary to the Honorable William Jennings Bryan Dorn United States Congressman from the Third District of South Carolina. In 1962 Jane married Emmet Napier Howle, Jr. and they lived in Raleigh NC, Columbia, SC and in Charlotte for the past 25 years. She was predeceased by her husband a few days earlier. She is survived by her son, Emmet Napier Howle III, and his wife Glenda and a grandson, Emmet Napier Howle IV, and a step grandson, Jordan Williams. Also surviving are her sister, Marian McGowan Nisbet, and several nieces, nephews, and countless friends she made over the years. Jane was active at First Presbyterian in Charlotte and a Stephen Minister for several years. Jane loved to be around young people and her great sense of humor and generous spirit drew them to her. She was a second mother and grandmother to children of all ages. Her involvement in a monthly prayer group who call themselves the Divine Divas was an example of her commitment to positively impacting the lives of others. Her home was always open for those who wanted to visit and she regularly found neighborhood children on the doorstep looking for something sweet. Jane's presence will be missed by all who knew her. The family will receive friends at Jane and Emmet's home on Wednesday May 16th at 5pm. The funeral will be held at 2pm on Thursday May 17th, First Presbyterian Church, 200 West Trade Street, Charlotte. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte.
