Born in Bishopville, he was a son of the late Howard Alford Sr. and the late Vera Carnes Alford. Mr. Alford was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Mission of Men Choir, the Sumter Civic Chorale, a U.S. Army-Air Corps veteran of World War II and was retired from the Sumter post office with 38 years of service. Surviving are his wife of Sumter; three sons, Mike Alford and wife, Debby, Ricky Alford and Kenneth Alford, all of Sumter; a daughter, Marianne A. Jeffords and husband, Reuben L., of Sumter; six grandchildren, James Alford, Meredith A. West, Ginnie Hardee, Wendi Hardee, Andrew Squires, and Patrick Squires; four great-grandchildren, Lorianne Spiegel, Malorie Spiegel, Drew Squires and Cannon West; special friends, Monroe and Lil Brown; a special niece, Ann Dennis; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil Alford and John C. Alford; and two sisters, Maggie Rowland and Hazel Dennis. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Walt Kendall officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, James Alford, Andrew Squires, Patrick Squires; two nephews, George and John Rowland; and Michael Spiegel. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Mission of Men Choir. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
