When the Civil War began in South Carolina, Perry changed his stanace opposing secession and became a court commander for the Confederate States of America in 1862. He rose quickly in the political ranks and was eventually appointed Provisional Governor for six months in 1865 when then- Governor Andrew Magrath was arrested after the Civil War. During the war, Mrs. Perry was secretary and treasurer of the “Ladies’ Hampton Legion,” and supported the war as loyally as her husband. [2] |
