he attended Yorkville Military School where Micah Jenkins was superintendent; he then entered the South Carolina Military Academy (The Citadel) and was graduated eighth in a class of 26 in 1861. [1] |

He belonged to the Citadel Corps of Cadets, the Chicora Rifles, the Twenty-Third Regiment, the “Coast Rangers”. The Charleston Mercury notes that he was captain of Cadets at the repulse of The Star of the West and he was also present at the “reduction of Fort Sumter.” The Charleston Daily Courier lists him as a Cadet Captain of Company “A” in his senior year at The Citadel. He was attached to the 23rd Infantry Regiment S. C. Volunteers. He became a Major and returned to Virginia. He was wounded in the Second Battle of Manassas and died in Virginia. The uniform worn by this gallant young man during his senior year in now at The Citadel. He was among The Citadel cadets who fired on the Union steamship Star of the West and Fort Sumter in January and April, respectively, of 1861. He was killed 6 Sep 1862, in the second Battle of Manassas. [2, 3] |
