  HIST	of Alcolu, South Carolina DOUGLAS CLAUDE BRUNSON Posted Saturday, December 25, 2021 6:00 am ALCOLU - Douglas Claude Brunson, 91, widower of Barbara Simmons Brunson, died on Friday, Dec. 24, 2021, at National Healthcare Center of Sumter. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Hubert Melton Brunson and Lilla Mae Newman Brunson. Mr. Brunson was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church and the VFW. He received a football scholarship to the University of South Carolina and also played in the first North-South football game in 1948 for Army. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Korean Conflict as a ski trooper, where he skied off Mount Fuji. He was a retired salesman of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. with 19 years of service. He also retired as former owner and operator of Brunson Nursery with his wife, Barbara, which they started in 1962. Doug never met a stranger. He loved to talk and visit with people. He had a heart of gold and he loved his children. The family would like to express their appreciation to National Healthcare and McLeod Hospice for their love and care of Doug. Surviving are a son, Jon Brunson of Alcolu; two daughters, Paula Brunson Bishop (Ben) of Sumter and Kathryn Easton of Saluda, North Carolina; five grandsons, Capers and Douglas Stoudenmire, Brandon Brunson, and Kent and Joel Easton; one granddaughter, Ashley Brunson; and great-granddaughters, Kelsey Easton, and Annie and Liza Stoudenmire. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Bertie Lee Squires and Vivian Daniels. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Champ Squires officiating. Burial will be at Brunson Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
