Jones Sr. 1922-2009 Clarendon County businessman ran company for 50 years JONES MANNING — Born in 1922, George Rou Jones Sr. always loved working, particularly in retail. The Alcolu native, who owned and operated Jones Sales Co. in his hometown for more than 50 years, was particularly proud of being both the oldest and longest-running General Electric appliance dealer in South Carolina. The 87-year-old died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at his home in Manning. "He had surgery about two months ago and never really recovered," said his eldest son Frank Jones, a local Realtor. The husband of Merrell Brunson Jones, George Jones operated his company as "Ten Stores in One" for more than 50 years in the Alcolu area, offering Sealy bedding, staple and fancy groceries, fresh meats, hardware, housewares, toys, dry goods, Browning automatic shotguns, sporting goods, beach rentals, farm lands, houses and store rentals, timberlands, hunting rights and, of course, GE major and small appliances. "I will always remember him selling his refrigerators and stoves," said Sen. John D. Land III, D-Manning. "I've known him all my life. In all my practice of law here in Manning, which has been 43 years, I have known him as a neighbor and as an exceptional businessman. He was hardworking and loved what he did." Jones started the business in 1945, opening a grocery store in a 20-foot-by-40-foot space that he once said was "as full as you could get it." "I was in the Army and I came home and told my daddy (L.M. Jones) that I wanted to open a store and that it would be $800 to open it," Jones told The Item in April. "My dad owned the building, but I got it in the division when the estate was divided." Jones enlarged his store seven times before it caught fire in 1998; he operated out of a house near the old location until he was robbed in 2002. After "retiring" from daily business, Jones continued to maintain various rental properties throughout the state, having most recently built three three-story buildings in Surfside Beach near his own personal home downtown in that area. "He was a businessman at his core," Frank Jones said. "He loved work, definitely." Land said George Jones was a credit to Clarendon County's business community. "He was so dedicated that even when his store burned down, he converted to selling his appliances out of a (house) and then a tractor-trailer," Land said. "He was out there soon as the smoke cleared and the ashes were pushed away." Land said Jones' affection for the people in Alcolu were what kept his business open. "He cared about the people in Alcolu and was always there to help them to whatever extent they needed, whether it was credit on a stove and refrigerator or whatnot," Land said. "Sometimes, he'd give them an old one. He was very generous." Frank Jones agreed. "He loved his family, loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren," he said. "He was a giving man throughout his life." Survivors besides his son and wife include a daughter, Linda J. Barkley and her husband, William, of Lexington; a son, Dr. George Rou Jones Jr. and his wife, Kay, of Manning; a daughter-in-law, Honri Jones of Manning; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Lewis Alderman and the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Clarendon Baptist Church, P.O. Box 307, Alcolu, SC 29001.
