Born in Hartsville, he was a son of the late Heyward and Maybell Johnson Gainey. Mr. Gainey was a devoted member of Concord Baptist Church and he dearly loved his church family. He was a resident of Palmetto Towers, where he enjoyed his community of friends. He retired from the grocery business. Survivors include four sisters, Betty L. Truett of Bishopville, Mary Gainey of Sumter, Brenda Gardner of Bishopville and Debra Berry (Charles) of Sumter; one brother, Bobby Gainey (Carolyn) of Bishopville; one brother-in-law, Terry Dobbins of New York; one sister-in-law, Ruby Adams of Lamar; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon Gainey, Richard Gainey and Tommy Adams; and one sister, Easter Dobbins. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Concord Baptist Church with the Rev. Gene Mosier officiating. Burial will be in Ashwood Church of the Nazarene cemetery in the Ashwood community. Pallbearers will be Lonnie Davis, Matthew Ison, Jimmy Saunders, Warren Davis, Ken McLeod and Lewis Riles. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the senior adult Sunday school class of Concord Baptist Church and Billy Geddings Sr. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his sister, 2595 U.S. 15 S., No. 27. The family would like to express their love and appreciation for the kindness, love, and prayers during this time. Memorial contributions may be made to Concord Baptist Church Building Fund, 1885 Myrtle Beach Highway, Sumter, SC 29153.
