- William J. Griffin had a mortgage from Dec. 11 1851 on Joseph H. and George Washington Stukes' 210 or 220 acres on Hunters Branch, waters of Jacks Creek; this dated Apr. 7, 1855 (Sumter Roll 217). On the 1850 Census ofr Sumter, one William Griffin 30 years of age, overseer and living alone, was enumerated twice at #527 and #768. On the 1860 Clarendon Census at #737, William J. Griffin, 44 years old, an overseer was living alone. Not found again on the census for Sumter or clarendon. Whether all of these or any of these are Dempsey's son is not clear.
