NEWMAN Louise Barnes Newman, widow of J. Epps Newman, died Sunday, March 8, 2009, at a local nursing facility after an extended illness. Born July 30, 1919, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Edwin Simeon and Elise Lee Barnes. Mrs. Newman was a longtime, dedicated member of Concord Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of Women of the Church, the choir, and active in all church activities. She was a homemaker and a cosmetologist who served many women in the Concord community. Survivors include two children, James E. Newman (Edie) and Terry L. Newman (Linda), both of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Jim Newman (Laura) of Columbia, Cynthia Newman of Sumter, Kim Saunders (Ian) of Mount Pleasant, Lee Newman (Leigh), Mark Newman, Woody Newman (Stacy) and Eddie Newman, all of Sumter; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Iris B. Cox of Cayce, Ida Lee Lockridge of Columbia, Sue B. Bond of Columbia and Nell B. Fetner of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Jerry Barnes of Charlotte, N.C.; and two special caregivers, Minnie Leaf and Doris Wilson. She was preceded in death by a son, Carroll E. Newman; a brother, Heyward E. Barnes; and two sisters, Rhay B. Emrie and Lillis B. Mack. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Concord Presbyterian Church with the Rev. James E. Braswell and the Rev. Walt Proctor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim Newman, Lee Newman, Mark Newman, Eddie Newman, Woody Newman, Ian Saunders, Randy Cox and Gerald Barnes. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the family home, 3470 Myrtle Beach Highway. Memorials may be made to Concord Presbyterian Church: Building Fund, 3350 E. Brewington Road, Sumter, SC 29153; or to a charity of one's choice.
