HUGGINS ALCOLU -- Clarence Lester Huggins, 88, widower of Bernice Louise Davis Huggins, died Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Cleveland L. and Mary Watts Huggins. Mr. Huggins was a U.S. Army National Guard veteran of World War II, having served 630 days of combat duty. He was a member of Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church, American Legion Post 15, and was a co-founder of Central Electric Co. Survivors include three sons, Clarence E. "Gene" Huggins, Alfred Huggins (Betty) and James W. Huggins (Linda), all of Alcolu; eight grandchildren, Lesley Kelly (Richard), Le Huggins, Craig Huggins (Kristi), Kevin Huggins, Lisa Tisdale (Alex), Misty Huggins, Tanis Collins (Preston) and Justin Huggins; two step-grandchildren, Skeebo Morris (Rebecca) and Malinda Avins (Spanky); nine great-grandchildren; special nephews, Kenneth Lewis (Carolyn) of Spokane, Wash., and Larry Huggins (Romell) of the Ashwood community; a special niece, Mary Dell Griggs (Ernest) of the Ashwood community; and a special friend, Ed Chappell. He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lewis Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Bauknight, the Rev. Jerry Watson and the Rev. Charles Clanton officiating. Burial will be in Brunson Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Le Huggins, Craig Huggins, Kevin Huggins and Justin Huggins, and grandsons-in-law, Preston Collins, Richard Kelly and Alex Tisdale. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his grandson, 2670 Ike Brunson Road. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Al Jordan, Dr. Wes Jacocks and the loving caregivers of Tuomey Healthcare System's Telemetry Unit and Surgical Inpatient staff.
