"Jack" Howell | Visit Guest Book COLUMBIA - John H. """Jack""" Howell, 81, died August 9, 2010. Born July 3, 1929, in Columbia, he was a son of the late Evan S. Howell and Ina Williamson Howell Rice. He graduated from Clemson University in 1955 with a B.S. in Textile Chemistry and earned a master""'s in Mathematics at U.S.C. He taught Math at Hand Junior High School and Eau Claire High School. He also taught several courses at U.S.C. He taught Math, Chemistry and Physics and retired from Midlands Tech after 22 years. A life-long pilot and flight instructor, he was a veteran of the Marine Corps and the Air Force. An avid outdoorsman, kayaker, jogger, traveler, camper, swimmer and motorcyclist, he was passionate about physical fitness. A 13-time champion of the Edisto River Canoe and Kayak Race in Orangeburg, he was known as """King of the Edisto.""" On his 70th birthday he placed 3rd and 5th in the world on the Concept II Rowing Machine, and in his 70s, could bench press 300 pounds. He continued to inspire by remaining active and challenging himself despite being slowed by Parkinson""'s Disease. At age 78 he completed his 20th ascent of Mt. Le Conte in the Great Smoky Mountains and, on his 80th birthday, did 200 chin-ups. He and Nancy enjoyed local theater, arts, the zoo and the library. Jack loved his family and friends and was loved and admired by those who knew him. Surviving are his wonderful wife of 53 years, Nancy Tucker Howell of Columbia; son, Bruce T. Howell, DMD, (fiancée, Kim Stevens) of Anderson; daughter, Debra H. Van Meter, D.V.M., (Stuart) of Knoxville, Tenn.; granddaughters, Katie (fiancé, Kyle Kiser) and Jennifer Howell, Erin and Michal Van Meter; daughter-in-law, Sally Howell Hipps (Donald) of Greenville; brother, Dr. James P. """Jim""" Howell (Libby) of Aiken; nieces, Elinor DesChamps O""'Donnell (Loren), Kristen Howell Yannakopoulos (Demetrios) and family; nephews, G. Thomas DesChamps Jr., M.D. (Elizabeth) and family, James P. Howell Jr. (Alyssa) and family, Allen Pearce (Heather) and family, Marc Pearce (Sam), Doug Howell, Craig Howell (Therese) and family; cousins; and family cats. He was predeceased by his brother, Evan S. Howell Jr., sister, Elinor Howell DesChamps, and nephew, Evan """Van""" Howell III. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Cats, P.O.
