| HIST | of Columbia, South Carolina at death- he had 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren News - Obituaries Thursday, Sep. 17, 2009 James Carson Bryan COLUMBIA — Memorial services for James C. “Jimmy” Bryan, 90, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 18, 2009, at Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel with a visitation to follow. Jimmy died Monday, September 14, 2009. Born in Sumter, S.C., he was a son of the late William Alfred and Catharine Moses Bryan. He was predeceased by his son, James C. (Jim) Bryan, Jr.; brothers, Bill, Clem, Werber, Louis, Harry and Frank; and his sisters, Susan, Abbie and Dee. Always active in athletics, he lettered in baseball, basketball and football at Edmonds High; played basketball and swam for the Sumter YMCA, and played American Legion baseball. At 85 he retired from competitive tennis as a state and regionally ranked player having enjoyed many tournaments and tennis trips with his friends. Jimmy served in the Coast Guard during WW II. He attended The University of South Carolina and USC Law School where he served as president of Phi Alpha Deta. He was awarded a Bachelor of Laws and admitted to the S.C. Bar in 1953; he subsequently received his Juris Doctor. He was grateful for the American Legion’s leadership in creation of the G.I. Bill which aided his education at USC. He received the Order of the Palmetto and retired from the South Carolina Legislative Council in 1981. During his 28 years, Jimmy served as its first full time Staff Attorney, Chief Attorney, Deputy Code Commissioner, and Assistant Director. Jimmy represented South Carolina at many southern and national legislative conferences during his tenure. Jimmy was an original member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, active in SC State Employees Association, and supported many charitable and cultural organizations. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Sara Richbourg Bryan; daughter and son-in-law, Sally B. and J.B. Drake of Atlanta; sons and daughters-in-law, William A. and Mary Spearman Bryan of Murrells Inlet, John F. and Frances John Bryan of Mt. Pleasant, Allan M. and Elizabeth Groves Bryan of Columbia; grandchildren, Will, Jack, Lauren, Catherine, Michael, Jay, Sara, Carson, Julia, Doug, Alex, and Jim; great-grandchildren, Mary Grace, Caroline, Nicholas, Sara Hunter, Gray and Isaiah; three generations of nieces and nephews; and countless friends and acquaintances.
