Basseterre, St. Kitts - A Sumter, S.C., man studying at a veterinary university in St. Kitts was shot and killed early Thursday at his home on the Caribeean island, police said. ¶ Daniel Bradford, 32, was shot before dawn in Conaree, located outside the capital, Basseterre, police and his father said. Bradford was shot in the head and back after he left his house to confront someone who was bothering his car, Bradford’s father, Dr. Linwood Bradford, said from his Sumter home. ¶ “He got to the apartment of another veterinary student who drove him to the hospital, he was still conscious then,” the father said. ¶ Authorities declined to comment on a motive. But Bradford’s father said his son had several attempted break-ins at his home. He has been in St. Kitts since December 2002. ¶ Daniel Bradford attended Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, which was founded in 1982, officials said. Most of its 570 students are Americans. ¶ Police said they would seek assistance from the FBI. ¶ The U. S. Embassy in Barbados, which covers St. Kitts, confirmed the death of an American student at the university but declined to provide details. ¶ The killing was the first homicide of the year in the former British colony of about 40,000 residents. There were 10 killings reported last year. By Krista Pierce- Item Staff Writer- Funeral services for Sumter native Daniel “Danny” Bradford who was killed in St. Kitts, West Indies, on Jan. 22 will be held today as authorities continue their investigation. ¶ Bradford, 32, a student at a veterinary school on the Caribeean Island, was shot in the head and back before dawn at his home in Conaree, located outside the captial of Basseteere. ¶ His father, Dr. Linwood Bradford, said his son was shot after he left his house to confront someone who was outside at his car. He said his son was able to get to the apartment of another veterinary student who drove him to the hospital befoe he died. ¶ St. Kittian authorities did not return calls for comment Thursday, but Bradford said he was not aware of any developments in the case. ¶ “The local police did what apears to be a pretty effective job of sealing off the area,” he said. “They were very cooperative in working with the FBI.” ¶ A five-member team of FBI agents traveled to St. Kitts from a Miami field office last week to assist in the investigation, Bradford said. ¶ “There’s a lot of stuff being sifted right now,” he said. “It happened early in the morning and it was pitch dark outside so there were no eyewitnesses.” ¶ Daniel Bradford had been in St. Kitts since December 2002 and was studying at the Ross University School of Veterinary Sciences. ¶ Linwood Bradford said University President Timothy Foster is expected to attend the funeral and university officials have informed the family that Daniel Bradford will be granted a post-humus degree during the spring commencement exercises. ¶ “They said the students and faculty wanted to do something to memorialize Danny,” Bradford said.
