| HIST | of Summerton, South Carolina NORVELLE PLOWDEN WALKER Posted Saturday, February 5, 2022 6:00 am SUMMERTON - Norvelle Plowden Walker, 87, widow of Thomas Irby Walker, died on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2022, at her home in Summerton. Born on Jan. 22, 1935, in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late Eleanora Norvelle Brailsford Plowden and Charles Nelson Plowden of Summerton. Her maternal grandparents were Norvelle Richardson Brailsford and Lucien Edward Brailsford; and her paternal grandparents were Sarah Leonora Nelson Plowden and Alfred Judson Plowden. Mrs. Walker attended Summerton High School, St. Catherine's School in Richmond, Virginia, and St. Mary's School in Raleigh, North Carolina. She graduated college from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in business and a minor in biology. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Mrs. Walker later taught at Manning High School, Summerton High School and Clarendon Hall School, where she taught all levels of English for 18 years. She received her Master of Education in English and joined Sumter's Sola chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers' society. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Married for 51 years to her beloved husband, Thomas, her wedding ceremony took place on Dec. 19, 1957, the 56th anniversary of her maternal grandparents, who were both present at the wedding. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Walker served as organist of Summerton Presbyterian Church. She served as president of the women of the church, taught Sunday school and was a member of the circle. She was proud to serve as both a deacon and an elder for the church. She received a lifetime service award from the women of the church and also was named as an elder emeritus. Active in the community, Mrs. Walker served on Clarendon County's Mental Health Board, the Clarendon Arts Commission on Tourism and was a member the Clarendon Chamber of Commerce. She belonged to the Pink Dogwood Garden Club, where she served as chaplain, and to the Julius A. Mood Post 30 American Legion Auxiliary, serving as Girls' State chairman for many years. She served on the original Summerton Downtown Development committee and was a secretary and special events coordinator for Summerton Cultural Arts performances. She was a member of the Clarendon County Historical Society and served on the restoration committee of the Richardson Cemetery. Mrs. Walker was a member of Elizabeth Peyre Richardson Manning Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of Teague Cantey Colonial Dames XVII Century. Her hobbies included reading, gardening, concerts, traveling, playing cards and time spent with friends. She was also known for her delicious Southern cooking and effortless entertaining. She is survived by four children, Maryanne Walker Moore, M.D. of Sumter, Thomas Irby Walker Jr. of Summerton, Charles Nelson Walker (Inger) of Manning and Elizabeth Walker McCurry (Matt) of Mount Pleasant; and five grandchildren, Matthew Singleton Moore IV (Rachel) of Columbia, Alexandria Walker Schaffer (Jeff) of Lugoff, Charles Nelson Walker Jr. of Charleston, Margaret Eleanora McCurry of Brooklyn, New York, and Lucien Mattison McCurry of Mount Pleasant. She was a very proud great-grandmother to Arabella Katherine Schaffer. She leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins, all of whom were very important to her and dearly loved. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by three brothers, Lucien Brailsford Plowden, Alfred Judson Plowden II and Charles Nelson Plowden Jr. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Monday at Summerton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Vikki Brogdon officiating. There will be a private family burial prior to the church service. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall, where light refreshments will be served immediately following the memorial service.
