HIST | Show up to social events in style with chauffeur service BY COREY DAVIS cdavis@theitem.com Looking for a way to make a splash at an upcoming social event? Imagine what it would be like getting out of a majestic 1938 Buick McLaughlin. Julie Bailey can make it happen. The 42-year-old opened her Southern Elegance Luxury Car and Chauffeur Service in February. "We provide a luxury car and a chauffeur for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, dates, picnics, proms and any other special occasions," she said. Bailey described the Buick as having classic teardrop-shaped headlights, wide whitewall tires, running boards and sweeping fenders. The car that spent 40 years in an auto museum in Ontario can comfortably carry four adult passengers, Bailey said. She added that the Buick was used in Savannah, Ga., for weddings and historic tours before she purchased it. Bailey declined to tell how much she paid for the car but said it was a lot. "I wanted to bring something unique to Sumter that the area has never had," Bailey said. "Sumter doesn't really have a lot of options for special events other than renting a limo or a horse ride. I feel a lot of people like a ride from yesteryear or appreciate antique vehicles and the classiness of them." The cost for customers to purchase a ride would be between $85 and $100 an hour, depending on the event, said Bailey. Serving as chauffeur is Jackie Clodfelter, who also works full time on Shaw Air Force Base. "She is a very professional and trustworthy person," Bailey said. Running a business is nothing new to Bailey. She also is part owner of a towed car and repair car shop called Bailey's Automotive and Hooker service, which Bailey runs with her husband, John "Bubba" Bailey Jr. In addition to being a mother, Bailey is a board member for the Sumter Chamber of Commerce and for the Sumter Young Professionals, a civic organization for working young adults between the ages of 25 to 45 in the community. The group provides networking and social opportunities, expands community understanding and broadens professional horizons. "I certainly have to carry plenty of hats, but I love what I do," Bailey said. While she is still trying to get the word out on her luxury car business, her long-term vision is to see it grow. "Starting any business in this economy is a risk, but I enjoy antique cars," Bailey said. "My vision is that I hope to expand and add a variety of classic cars in the future."
