Dorothy Swinton Whaley Knight, 100, widow of Furman Jenkins Knight, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at Covenant Place, where she lived for the past eight years. Mrs. Knight was born Dec. 16, 1910, in Richland County, the eldest daughter of the late Judge Marcellus Seabrook Whaley and Edna Lyman Reed Whaley. She was the last survivor of five children, the others having died in reverse order from youngest to oldest. After finishing Columbia High School, Mrs. Knight graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina at the age of 19, where she was a charter member of Chi Omega Sorority; a May Court attendant; and elected to Phi Beta Kappa. After graduation, she taught French and art at Louisburg Jr. College in Louisburg, N.C., for one year before her marriage on June 16 1932, in Trinity Cathedral, Columbia, to the late Furman Jenkins Knight of Sumter, who died July 12, 1977. They lived in Sumter, his home, for 32 years before moving to Columbia in 1964. Active in art circles in Sumter, she was a member of the Sumter Art Association and their 1997 Yearbook was dedicated to her. She also taught private art classes in her home and was a volunteer art teacher at the YWCA. Mrs. Knight was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Republican Women's Club. She was very active at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church in Sumter until joining her husband at Trinity Methodist Church, Sumter, in 1948. Since the 1970's, she had been a member of Bethel Methodist Church, Forest Acres and the Belle Dent Circle. Mrs. Knight started the Bethel ministry of making baby blankets for unwed mothers, which were donated through the Birthright Program, where she was named the Birthright Volunteer of the Year in 1987. The program continues to this day. For many years during December, she sponsored a Chrismon (Christian symbols) class in her home for the neighborhood children. She enjoyed vacationing with her family at Edisto Beach (the last time, two years ago) and working in the yard with God's flowers. Mrs. Knight was a talented, loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. Her kind ways and positive attitude touched all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. During her life, even to the very end, she lived the Christian life, always putting others ahead of herself, and never saying an unkind word. Her words upon parting were, "Jesus is with you always." She is survived by her daughter, Carol Cathcart Knight Fowles (James Henry Jr.) of Eastover; her son, Furman Delano Knight (Blanche Cox Mayes) of Aiken; six grandchildren, James Henry Fowles III (Nora McArthur) of Columbia, Dr. Dorothy Fowles Kendall (Dr. Edward McDonnell) of Eastover, Jenkins Knight Fowles of Greensboro, N.C., Ruth Fowles Rush (John Spencer) of Columbia, Furman Delano Knight Jr. of Aiken and Dr. Robert Mayes Knight (Suzan Saturday) of Winnsboro. Also surviving are 13 great-grandchildren, James Henry Fowles IV (Logan), John Russell Fowles, Burton Palmer Fowles, Robert Chilton Kendall, Sarah Seabrook Kendall, Katharine Garden Kendall, Caroline Clarkson Fowles, John Newton Fowles, Joseph Whaley Rush, Benjamin Spencer Rush, Marisa Danielle Knight, Joshua Robert Grant Knight and Nicholas Quinton Lee Knight; nine nieces and nephews; and her first cousin, Barbara Baynard Whaley. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; a son, Richard Warren Knight; a sister, Alys Whaley Smith; and three brothers, Baynard Reed Whaley, Dr. Atherton Mikell Whaley and Marion Hampton Whaley Sr. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery, 700 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, with the Rev. James P. Rush officiating. The family will receive friends between 4 and 7 p.m. Friday at the home of her grandson, Mr. and Mrs. James H. Fowles III, 4531 Bellefield Lane, Columbia. The family will also receive friends at the cemetery after the service. Memorials may be made to the F. Jenkins Knight 1924 & Richard Warren Knight 1962 Memorial Scholarship Fund at Wofford College, 429 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29303; Bethel Methodist Church, 4600 Daniel Drive, Columbia, SC 29206; Birthright of Columbia, 2318 Devine St., Columbia, SC 29205; the Edisto Open Land Trust, P.O.
