James Boyd Chewning, 79, who entered into rest on Nov. 1, 2017, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, at Salem Church Cemetery, Bishopville. The. Rev. Jeremy Howell will officiate. Hancock-Elmore Hill Funeral Home is serving the family. Rev. Chewning was born on Sept. 5, 1938, in Mullins, a son of the late Claudius Pritchard and Alliene Leach Chewning. He served as a United Methodist Church minister until his retirement in 2004. He is survived by a sister, Mary Lowder of Sumter; nephews, Bobby Lowder and Tom Lowder, both of Sumter, Dave Beaver of Mattoon, Illinois, and Hugh Chewning of Irvine, California; nieces, Maryanne Lowder and Martha Sturgeon, both of Sumter, and Ruth Hendrick of Ricon, Georgia; one aunt; and a number of cousins. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and nephew, Scott Lowder. [1, 3] | |
