MILI	At the beginning of the Civil War, he was mustered into Captain T. B. Walsh’s company, “Claremont Cavalry,” Holcombe Legion, South Carolina Volunteers, C. S. A. He was a member of Claremont Masonic Lodge No. 64 and when he left home for the battlefield, he placed the Masonic emblem in his wife’s hand and told her it might save her and the family should the enemy invade the district. (The highly prized emblem is still in the possession of one of his descendants.)
