Pauline Jackson Shuler, 85, widow of Jimmy Shuler, entered into rest Sunday, April 17, 2011. Born April 2, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Lucius Kenneth Jackson and Kate Cummings Jackson. She lived her entire life in Sumter County with her formative years spent in the Dalzell community. She graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1943 as class president and salutatorian. She furthered her education at Columbia College, graduating in 1947 with a degree in education. She taught briefly in Greeleyville and then returned to Sumter County to teach in the Sumter county schools and spent five years teaching at Hillcrest High School and then 25 years teaching at Mayewood High School. She retired from her education profession after more than 30 years in Sumter School District 2 schools. As a senior in high school, she was voted "best all around girl," "prettiest girl," "sweetest girl," and "most influential girl." She is best remembered and described by her peers from 1943 with a simple poetic phrase, "I see her sweet and fair." She was a member of Alice Drive Baptist Church. Surviving are three sons, James "Jim" Franklin Shuler Jr. and Kenneth Paul Shuler, both of Sumter, and Herbert "Woody" Woodward Shuler and daughter-in-law, Lucy Connolly Shuler, of Augusta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Lauren Elizabeth Shuler, Jackson Woodward Shuler and David Hugh Shuler; a sister, Florence Jackson Burkett of Dalzell; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. Clay Smith officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Alice Drive Baptist Church, 1305 Loring Mill Road, Sumter, SC 29150.
