In 1846, at the age of 20, Moses left his native Bavaria to seek his fortune in America. His bride-to-be, Hannah Jekel, arrived from Bavaria in 1853. They moved from Sumter to Manning just after the town was established.  [1, 3]

  “He was a businessman, with a mercantile store plus a lot of other businesses, and all of their children also were movers and shakers in town.” Meleney said. “They had (nine) children who became lawyers, businessmen, financiers, teachers, they were on the equivalent of county council, the school boards, all of those things, so they were very, very involved.” Meleney said the Levis also started one of Manning’s first “public” schools.
