MATHIS Mary Inez Cubbage Mathis, 89, widow of Len Benjamin Mathis Sr., died Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in the Bethel Community of Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Allen Betran and Mary Alice Kolb Cubbage. Mrs. Mathis was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served in the church nursery for many years, expressing her love for little children and her Lord. Surviving are a son, James Edwin Mathis Sr.; a daughter and her husband, Dotty and Dan Lyles; a sister, Virginia Stafford; a sister-in-law, Betty Cubbage, all of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Margaret Smith of Charlotte, N.C.; and a brother-in-law, the Rev. Russell L. Strange of Columbia. She was "Nanny" to her seven grandchildren, Chuck VanPatten, Mark Lyles, Paige Stokes, Heather Brown, Tami Griffin, Keleigh Corbett and Jamie Mathis; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Len Benjamin Mathis Jr.; two brothers, Rudolph and James Cubbage; three sisters, Onie Stack Mizzell, Hattie Butt and Margaret Strange; and a grandson, Austin Mathis. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Harold P. Greene Jr. and the Rev. Stephen P. Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the home of her daughter, 970 Andiron Drive.
