| HIST | I put some of his information in- but can’t figure out some of it- jkh DEACON JERRY BENBOW On Tuesday, May 11, 2010, the celestial heavens opened up to welcome one of its sons home in the spirit of Deacon Jerry Benbow, 68, husband of Catherine Boyd Benbow, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter. Born Sept. 9, 1941, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Henry and Willie Mae Vaughn Sr. He attended Lincoln High School in Sumter. He was employed with Campbell Soup Co. for 19 years and nine years with Exide-Yuasa before retiring. Deacon Benbow was a dedicated and faithful member of St. Mark Four Bridges Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the deacon board, president of the sanctuary choir, member of the trustee board, Sunday school teacher, church treasurer and division leader of the pastoral support ministry. He was united in marriage to Catherine Boyd Benbow for 49 glorious years, and they would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 18, 2010, along with their children. His children will remember him as a man with great faith who loved God, his family, his church and his community. He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted and loving wife of 49 glorious years, Catherine Benbow; eight children, Wanda (Thomas) Colclough of Sumter, Ricky (Cassandra) Benbow and Debra Mack, all of Dalzell, Vicky (Simon) Levy of Sumter, Theresa Benbow, Mark Benbow (Rosalinda), and Vivian Lane of the home, Margie (Isaac) Warren of Conyers, Ga.; a godson, Marcus Wilson; a host of grandchildren that were raised in the home as their own, Mario Benbow, Shileka Benbow, Serenity Lane, Zanaya Benbow, and Nasir Benbow, all of Sumter, and Marcus Benbow of Baum Holder, Germany; two brothers, Willie (Doris) Vaughn of Macon, Ga., and Walter (Deloris) Vaughn of Dalzell; three sisters, Mary Loney of Rembert, Janie English of Dalzell, and Bertie Mae Nathaniel of Sumter; six sisters-in-law, Thelma Vaughn of Dalzell, Allen Boyd and Gladys Glover, both of Washington, D.C., Rose Lee (Sammie) McQuillar of Bishopville, Edna Vaughn and Elizabeth (Robert) Peoples of Sumter; three brothers-in-law, James Boyd Jr. of Sumter, Lewis Boyd of Summerton, and William Boyd of Newark, N.J.; 23 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two special friends, Howard Chappell and Dr. Vijay Pinto; a special niece, Viola Benbow of the home; an adopted son, Ikeef Brailsford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Benbow Jr. and Thomas Lane Jr.; one grandson, Jaleel Benbow; one sister, Willie Mae Scott; and three brothers, Henry Vaughn III, Elijah Vaughn and James Vaughn. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Sunday at St. Mark Four Bridges Missionary Baptist Church, 2280 Four Bridges Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Sammie D. Simmons, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Minister Cynthia Golden, the Rev. Michael Walker and Pastor Clifton Witherspoon. The family will receive friends at the home, 4775 Cannery Road, Dalzell. The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. The funeral cortege will leave from the home at 2:30 p.m. Floral bearers will be deaconesses and missionaries. Pallbearers will be deacons and trustees. Burial will be in the St. Mark Four Bridges Missionary Baptist Church Yard Cemetery, Sumter.
