Jerry Wright, of 427 Holloway St., departed this earthly life on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, at his home. Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Nathan and Vermelle Murray Wright, and was reared by his grandmother the late Dora Murray. He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. He was a life member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. He loved to help others. He was known as Mr. Fix-it-man, a mechanic that had the ability to take a car apart in a day and put it back together, without charging a fee. He worked on several jobs. He was last employed as a truck driver for Scott White Logging Company. He became disabled in 1988. His illness didn't stop his willingness or concern for others. He loved the Lord Jesus Christ, he ministered to his family and everyone that entered his home. He leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 51 years, Sarah Wright of the home. Nine children: four sons, Michael (Debra) Wright, Sammie Lee McKnight, all of Sumter, Richard (Dorothy) McDuffie and Joseph McDuffie, all of Rochester, NY.; five daughters, Sherriol Kelley, Rosa Chatman, Debra Coplin, Betty (Silas) Washington all of Sumter, Daisy (Sam) Bradley of Wedgefield and Mary Jones of Seaside, Calif.; one brother, Herbert (Nora) Wright of Midlothian, Va.; eight sisters Nellie Blair and the Rev. Eartha Lee Reed, both of Sumter, Bertheen Holder of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ruby Banks and Margaret (Francis) Howard all of Manchester, Conn., Delores (Maurice) Bacon of Bridgeport, Conn., Deborah (St. Clair, Jr.) Britt of East Hartford, Conn., and Pearl Wright of Tallahassee, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, John (Louise) McKnight and Leroy (Ethel) McKnight; four sisters-in-law, Helen Brooks, Carrie McKnight, Viola McKnight and Lula McKnight; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one son Jeremiah Wright Jr.; three brothers, Willie Lewis, Elder Senior Lewis, Joe Lewis; and one sister, Dorothy Sanders; one brother-in-law, Charles Blair; and one son-in-law, Michael Coplin. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright, eulogist Elder John McKnight and Minister David Laws, assisting. Burial will follow in the Bradford Cemetery. Viewing will take place at the funeral home from 3 until 6:30 p.m. today.
