Guitarist and full-time musician Kevin Jarvis spoke recently on the six-member band The Green Swamp Collective, its first album, and its new release "Carolina Sun" that premiered on Friday on all major sources including Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, YouTube and BandCamp. The digital single's lyrics are about the four seasons - some long, others relatively short - in the Palmetto State and life here and would be considered upbeat, he said. The band got its name from The Green Swamp in Sumter County that runs from Dalzell into Second Mill Pond and eventually is a source for the Pocotaligo River, Jarvis said. His home in Dalzell is at the site where the swamp actually forms. Jarvis also explained what is meant by "folk rock." "What we do is all acoustic instrumentation - acoustic guitars, mandolin, violin or fiddle, as we say in our style - and lots of vocal harmonies," he said. "Folk would be the tradition of your Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, but we have mixed it with a full drum kit and a little bit of a rock feel. It's not 'folk rock' without a drummer. Then, it would just be folk." The band's most popular song to date is likely "Song of the River" from its first album. "It got shared on a couple big Spotify playlists and got quite a few plays there," Jarvis said. "People also usually like it at shows." As far as shows, The Green Swamp Collective has played at Sumter's Iris Festival, The Lizard Man Stomp in June in Bishopville and a couple times at the Sumter Opera House, he added. Private parties and other venues have also been in the mix, and on Dec. 8, the band will perform at Sumter Original Brewery in the downtown area. In addition to Jarvis (acoustic guitar, vocals), members include Trey Baker (vocals, acoustic guitar, mandolin); Jennifer Weich (vocals, keyboards, flute); Jeff Wilson (bass guitar, vocals); Matthew Eldridge (fiddle, mandolin, vocals); and Rick Walker (drums, percussion).
