Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Irvin and Antonia Mitchum Gainey. Survivors include his wife; a son, Earl Gainey Jr. of Sumter; seven stepchildren, Samantha Watford, Megan Watford, Becky Watford Hodge, Robert Watford, Ricky Watford, Ryan Watford and Ronnie Watford, all of Sumter; two grandchildren, Daniel Gainey and Alexis Cockerill; three brothers, Bobby Gainey, Don Gainey and Gerald Gainey, all of Sumter; a sister, Maggie Berry of Sumter; and his mother-in-law, Peggy Roberts of Sumter. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, LeGrant Gainey, E.J. Gainey and Larry Gainey; and a sister, Susie Beard. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Kevin Cribb officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
