Olive Elizabeth "Betty" Griffith McLeod, 93, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Nov. 27, 1914, in Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of the late John McCool Griffith and the late Olive Leona Bartholic Griffith. Mrs. McLeod was a graduate of Roosevelt High School, Wyandotte, Mich., where she was class valedictorian. She grew up in Wyandotte. She traveled extensively with her parents and was in Paris in 1927 when Charles Lindburgh landed on his historic trans-Atlantic flight. She received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Michigan, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and Phi Kappa Phi honor society. She also received a business degree from Webber International (then Webber-Babson). She was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter. Memberships included the Sumter Junior Welfare League, The Sumter Assembly, The Cotillion and several book clubs. Mrs. McLeod was twice married, first to the late Edwin Dudley Corning and later to the late Frank Alexander McLeod Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth McLeod Britton of Sumter; sons, Edwin Dudley Corning Jr. of Sumter, Roland Shelton Corning of Columbia, Frank Alexander McLeod III of Columbia and John McCool Griffith McLeod of Brevard, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and special caregivers, Mary Blair, Alma Jones and Frances Montgomery. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Dr. John Barr officiating. Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 634 Antlers Drive. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, P.O. Box 338, Sumter, SC 29151; the Sumter Little Theatre, 14 Mood Ave., Sumter, SC 29150; or the Sumter Gallery of Art, 200 Hasel St., Sumter, SC 29150.
