The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office identified the man as Sumter native Stacy Pritchard, 51, of Ralph Bell Road in Summerton. Deputies were at a hotel executing a warrant on Pritchard for a burglary charge in Clarendon County. After learning Pritchard was at Clarion Inn in Santee, the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office. "We responded with our SWAT team after it was determined the level of this threat," Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a statement. Both Ravenell and Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley responded to the scene to direct their respective officers to surround the hotel. During the standoff that lasted more than two hours, Ravenell said the suspect was encouraged to surrender. He said Pritchard refused to do so and was then informed, via negotiations, that the hotel room would be gassed. Pritchard fired one shot when Orangeburg SWAT team members attempted to make entry. "As deputies were approaching the door, there was a shot fired from the hotel room that went through the door," said Tommy Crosby, public information officer at S.C. Law Enforcement Division. "The bullet then hit one of the ballistic shields, not a vest, but the shield that one of the deputies was holding." Richard Walker, media director at Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office, said there were at least four SWAT team members in range of the shot when Pritchard fired. Others were on the floor of the hotel room and surrounding the hotel. Deputies did not fire shots during the standoff, according to Walker. Another shot was heard from inside the hotel room, and SLED was called to take over the case. Pritchard was deceased when law enforcement found him in the room, Crosby said. The Orangeburg County Coroner's Office said Pritchard died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. $378 $1,445.95 Hot $109.95 Hot $999.95 $55.16 Hot $30.95 Hot http://opcbanners.creativecirclemedia.com/www/delivery/ck.php?n=ab522bec&cb=INSERT_RANDOM_NUMBER_HERE' target='_blank'> An investigation into the incident was turned over to SLED.
