Rodgers, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, March 8, 2014. He was born in Sumter on July 28, 1923. He was a son of the late Kershaw and Ruth D. Rodgers. He was a WWII veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was an active member of Pine Grove Baptist Church. He is survived by a son, Larry O. Rodgers (Wanda) of Rembert; a daughter, Tonie Smith (Dr. Laurie) of Lake Lure, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jay Brogdon (Susan), Fran Locklair (Randy), Brit Rodgers and Dana Reeves (Charles); six great-grandchildren, Dalton, Callie and Hayden Brogdon, Marshall and Ben Anderson and Leia Reeves; and one brother, Chandler Rodgers (JoAnn) of Sumter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, J. C. “PeeWee” Rodgers and Harry Rodgers; and two sisters, Ruth R. Richburg and Mary Bedwell. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with family visitation from 11:30 am to 1 p.m. prior to the service. Pastor Don Riner will officiate with Wanda Rodgers assisting. Burial with military honors will be in Sumter Cemetery. Palbearers will be Brit Rodgers, Jay Brogon, Dalton Brogdon, Marty Lyles, Chip McMillan and Terry Rodgers. The family would like to give special gratitude to Dr. Hugh Stoddard and Dr. Phil Brandt who have not only been his physicians but his friends. A special thank you also to staff and doctors at the VA Hospital who have shown such compassion and attentiveness to our family. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Pine Grove Baptist Church, 433 Old Manning Road, Sumter, SC 29154 or the VFW Post 3034, 1925 Gion St., Sumter, SC 29150 Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
