BY RANDY BURNS Special to The Item BISHOPVILLE - A Cassatt man has been charged with vehicular homicide after a 59-year-old Camden woman was found dead about 2 a.m. Sunday on property owned by a private hunting club near McGee Town Road in Lee County, according to Lee County Sheriff Daniel Simon. Deborah Grainger-Brown, of 1107 Roberts St., Camden, was pronounced dead near a cabin on 1607 McGee Town Road by Lee County Coroner Alford Elmore. An autopsy performed at the Newberry Pathology Associates on Sunday indicated she died of blunt force head injuries, caused by being struck by a vehicle while she was lying on the ground, Elmore said. "Because of the injuries she suffered, we know she had to be lying on the ground," he said. Authorities think she was "run over by a pickup truck," Simon said. Charles Glenn Tedder, 61, has been charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of great bodily injury or death. He was taken to Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, where he remained Monday, Simon said. Tedder and Grainger-Brown, who were described by Simon as acquaintances, were alone at the cabin on Saturday night, Simon said. Tedder told authorities that Grainger-Brown went outside "to go to the bathroom but did not return." "He said he went in his car and looked for her, but couldn't find her anywhere," Simon said. "He said he went to Camden and told the woman's daughter that he couldn't find her. When they returned to the cabin, they found her body in the yard." Simon said the woman's death is thought to be accidental. "We think it was an accident that was caused by alcohol," Simon said. "The two of them were alone in the cabin and had been there for awhile. We don't think (the suspect) intentionally meant to kill her, but alcohol was involved. At this point, we are not charging murder, because we can't prove malice." Elmore said Grainger-Brown might have been asleep when she was struck by the car. "We just don't know," he said. "It is pure speculation at this point." Simon said the cabin is in the woods about a mile from the main road (McGee Town Road). The State Law Enforcement Division is assisting in the investigation, he added.
