Barnes Boyle III, 47, said his late father, Adville Barnes Boyle Jr., was more attuned to the business aspects of running an automobile dealership, while his late uncle, Ladson Boyle, loved the cars, which was a great fit. After his family's 75 years in the business — and 25 years for him — Boyle decided in late August to sell the Cadillac portion of his family's Broad Street dealership to Jones Chevrolet, with Scott Will taking over Toyota, Mazda and Scion. A LONG HISTORY Boyle Motor Co. began selling cars in 1933 as a Chrysler-Plymouth dealership, according to information provided by Barnes Boyle III, which he said was straight out of an older company handbook. The company was a subsidiary of Boyle Construction Co., the handbook said, whose principals were E.B. Boyle, Barnes Boyle Sr. and S.F. Stoudenmire. From 1933 to 1941, Boyle Motor Co. sold not only Chrysler-Plymouth, but also Packard and Willys cars. In 1940, the motor company dropped the Chrysler-Plymouth franchise and took the Oldsmobile-Cadillac and GMC truck franchise. R.D. Blanding was the general manager during this period. Joe Perry / The Item Barnes Boyle III looks over some mementos of his family's long association with the automobile business in Sumter. In 1942, because of World War II and a lack of new car production in keeping with the war effort, Boyle Motor Co. closed, and the building was used as a bowling alley and teenage canteen during that time. After WW II, the company reopened as the Oldsmobile-Cadillac-GMC dealership, with Lester W. Allen as general manager. In 1949, Barnes Boyle Sr. died and Barnes Boyle Jr. became the dealer — the youngest in the country at 23 years old, Boyle III said. He was joined in 1955 by his brother, Ladson Boyle. In 1971, the company moved from its Main Street location, where it had been since 1939, to 2540 Broad St. — before that, Barnes Boyle III thinks the first location was in the area of Liberty Street. "I spent every summer working at the dealership," Boyle III said, starting when he was 12 years old. "I never claimed or tried to be a mechanic," he said, laughing, at the office of Boyle Buy Here-Pay Here and Boyle Leasing Corp. at 347 Broad St., which he continues to operate. SCOTT WILL TOYOTA ADDRESS: 2542 Broad St. PHONE: (803) 469-9500 HOURS:8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday. Toyota service department: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Saturday. Mazda service department: 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday; closed Saturday. He liked to hang out at the dealership, he said, and as he was the youngest person there, was often teased. "But they'd say, 'We better be careful — we might be working for you someday,'" he recalled, laughing again. The car business, he said, has been "very good to us." "The Lord's blessed us," he said. "We give all the blessings to the Lord." Boyle said in a late August statement it was hard to leave a business his family had been involved with for so many years. "The relationships with the people I have worked with will be what I miss the most," he said. "The staffs at the two dealerships are what made the company successful. I am most truly thankful to our loyal customers who have supported us for the last 75 years. Serving generations of buyers has been a true blessing and joy." Joe Perry / The Item Scott Will took over Toyota, Mazda and Scion in late August and looks forward to building the inventory to give customers a wider selection. A NEW OWNER Scott Will said recently he is excited to be in Sumter and knows the community well. The 43-year-old Pennsylvania native graduated from Temple University in 1987 with a bachelor of science in business and economics, and moved to South Carolina three years later. Though he spent the majority of the past 10 years as a minority owner/manager of East Coast Honda and East Coast Volkwagen in Myrtle Beach, Will has been in "the car business," since he was 16 years old, he said. "I just love cars and I especially love the people," he explained. "What I like most about it — you're all the time doing many, many different things." The people, the variety and the energy associated with the automobile business are what keeps him going, he said, noting he officially took the Toyota, Mazda and Scion brands on Aug. 28. Will praises the Boyle family's outstanding reputation and excellent staff, and said he hopes to build upon a brand they sold so successfully for three generations. "This dealership brought me here," he said. "I'm very familiar with Sumter. It's a fabulous community with a lot of wonderful people. I think it's a good place to raise a family and do business." Will and his wife, Mary Anne, have been married 20 years, and have three sons — Brian, 16, Kevin, 14, and James, 8. He plans on bringing about some change to the dealership, such as broadening the selection and inventory. "Toyota has committed to giving us an additional 190 cars in the next 90 days," he noted, and looks to have 150 to 200 Toyotas on the lot at all times. When he's "fully up and running," he thinks he'll have about 300 cars at all times, including some pre-owned cars as well. He sees Mazda and Scion as exciting brands with a lot of youthful appeal, and foresees an independent Mazda staff that will function under the same umbrella. "We're just excited to be here and look forward to bringing great service to the people of Sumter," he added, "and the body shop has some of the most modern equipment in Sumter."
