| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina Virginia Reynolds Burrows celebrates 100th birthday Posted Saturday, November 12, 2022 6:00 am Virginia Reynolds Burrows celebrated her 100th birthday on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2022. She was born in Detroit, Michigan, but has lived on the Burrows family farm near Woodrow since 1946. Mrs. Burrows graduated from nursing school in July 1944. Shortly thereafter, she became an Army nurse and served in World War II as a second lieutenant stationed in Okinawa. While there, she met James Richardson Burrows of Oswego, who was serving as a first lieutenant in the Army. Virginia and James married on Nov. 17, 1945, in Korea. Their wedding was featured in The New York Times for being the first wedding among members of the United States occupation forces in Korea. After returning to the Burrows family farm, which would come to be known as Triple C Farm, they raised eight children - six sons and two daughters. Mrs. Burrows received a Quilt of Valor from St. Anne and St. Jude Roman Catholic Church Women's Guild in honor of their service and in memory of her late husband, who passed away in 1992. During the past several weeks, Mrs. Burrows has been showered with visits and cards by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchild, nieces, nephews and friends. Their beloved mother was born on Nov. 9, 1922, in Detroit, Michigan. Mrs. Burrows, spouse of the late James Richardson Burrows of Oswego, spent most of her 100 years raising eight children on the Burrows family farm near Woodrow. The family will hold a visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the family home. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 1074 St. Philip's Road, Dalzell. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is assisting the family. Virginia Reynolds Burrows Thursday, November 9th, 1922 - Sunday, August 20th, 2023 Obituary After 100 years of bringing joy to those who were blessed to know and love her, Virginia Reynolds Burrows went to be with her Heavenly Father on August 20, 2023. Virginia was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 9, 1922, and graduated from nursing school in July 1944. Shortly thereafter, she became an Army nurse and served in World War II as a second lieutenant stationed in Okinawa, where she met her future husband, James Richardson Burrows of Oswego, S.C. They married in Korea on November 17, 1945, and their wedding was featured in the New York Times for being the first wedding among members of the United States occupation forces in Korea. After the war, Virginia traveled to South Carolina without her husband, who was discharged from the army after her. She met her new family members for the first time at the train station in Florence and traveled with them to the Burrows family farm. James soon joined her there and they began running the farm, which would come to be known as Triple C Farm, and raising eight children — six sons and two daughters. Virginia worked as a nurse at the hospital in Bishopville for several years. She mostly worked the third shift so that she could make sure dinner was on the table for the family members who worked on the farm. Virginia enjoyed painting ceramics, playing cards with her mother and sister, shopping for books at flea markets at the beach, and rocking on front porches with friends and family. Later in life, she liked to spend her days sleeping late and taking naps; making weekly shopping trips to town that usually included lunch at Red Lobster; and staying up late to watch Hallmark movies while sipping on a favorite beverage. A devoted member of Saint Anne Roman Catholic Church, Virginia received a Quilt of Valor in August 2021 from the Women’s Guild in honor of the couple’s military service. Over a life that spanned almost 101 years, Virginia always greeted her family and friends with her signature sunshine smile and a loving dose of her sweet and sassy personality. Among those who will miss her kind, giving and fun-loving nature the most are her children Kathy (Joe) Dennis, Billy (Debbie) Burrows, Sammy (Kathy W.) Burrows, Clark (Kathy S.) Burrows, Stan Burrows and Rey Burrows; daughter-in-law Laura Burrows (widow of Jimmy); 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews from the Burrows and Reynolds families. The pain of saying goodbye to a beloved mother, grandmother and aunt is eased by the knowledge that Virginia is now reunited with her husband; two of her eight children, Jimmy and Doris Burrows; her parents, Sam and Doris Reynolds of Detroit, and her sisters, Alice and Patsy. The family will hold a visitation at the family home from 5 PM to 8 PM Friday, August 25, 2023. A graveside service will be held 10:30 AM Saturday, August 26, 2023, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 1074 St. Philip’s Road, Dalzell. Pallbearers are Virginia’s grandsons, Michael Dennis, Richie Burrows, Ashby Burrows, Dru Burrows, Edward Burrows and Alex Burrows. Alternate pallbearers are great-grandsons Austin Burrows and Hunter Burrows. Elmore Cannon Stephens Funeral Home is assisting the family. Virginia’s family thanks the attentive hospice staff of Amedisys who provided loving care in her final months.
