| HIST | Ray B. Simmons Ray Belton Simmons, born Oct. 5, 1938, departed for a better life on Feb. 18, 2014 from his home with his family at his side. He was the beloved husband of 47 years to Ingrid Evans Simmons. He was a son of the late Henry Belton and Pauline Jones Simmons. Ray graduated from Edmunds High School in 1956 and also the University of South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina National Guard and was activated to Europe during the Berlin Crisis, serving as a communication specialist. He was a specialist with the South Carolina Department of Health Environmental Protection Agency and retired in 1998 from the United States Railroad Retirement Board. He and his wife raised their children in Charlotte, N.C., for 29 years, returning to Sumter in 2000. Ray was a dedicated son, husband, father, brother, uncle and friend. As a gentle spirit and quiet man, he loved with all his heart and was an inspiration to everyone. He fought a brave battle with cancer for more than 6½ years, never complaining and always encouraging those around him. To know him was truly a gift from God. He is survived by a precious daughter, Lee Simmons Causey and her husband, Brad, of Charlotte; a loving son, Henry Brett Simmons and his wife, Casey, of Sumter; and his surviving sweet sister, Barbara Brunson and her husband, Doug. Grandchildren are Cason Causey, John Henry Simmons, Camden Simmons, Briana Simmons and Emily Simmons. Ray is also survived by a number of wonderful nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws, four aunts and uncles. A celebration of a life well lived will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with his brother-in-law, Dr. John Dickey Evans, and the Rev. Henry Pitts Evans leading the celebration. Special music will generously be provided by Floride McKoy. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Mills, George Moseley, DD Edmunds, Kirk McLeod Jr., Billy Lane, Joe Brunson, David Seidl, Wayne Elmore and Bobby Burkett. The family will receive friends on Saturday one hour prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 500 Pinewood Road, Suite 2, Sumter, SC 29154. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to SC Oncology, Dr. Leland McElveen, Dr. Arland Compton, Tuomey Hospice, Kim Gardener, Jeanette Harrison and to all the loving sitters.
